Area of Interest/Expertise:
Multimedia Communications, IoT, Internet Engineering, Quality of Experience (QoE), Adaptive Audio/Video Encoding (OPUS, VP8), Congestion Control Mechanisms (TCP, TFRC, AIMD, DCCP, BBR), Active Queue Management (RED, CoDel, PIE, SFQ)

  • Adaptive Encoding of multimedia at the Application layer, using OPUS, VP8, MPEG-4, HEVC, H.265 codecs - this will adapt the quality of encoded multimedia in terms of frame: quality, rate and resolution, to meet fluctuating bitrate requirements of the IP network.
  • Congestion Control Mechanisms at the Transport layer, such as TFRC, DCCP, CUBIC, BBR [3][9][10]- which will control the amount of data going into the network by the application, and will adjust its sending rate smoothly over time.
  • Active Queue Management (AQM) at the Network layer, using CoDel, PIE, RED, or SFQ [4][5]- which will regulate the occupancy of the buffer by directly controlling the time a packet spends in the queue, irrespective to link speed (that may be dynamically changing), RTT (round trip time), or traffic load, in order to avoid the issues of bufferbloat. This AQM will auto-tune to the conditions stated aiding Internet service providers (ISP) to deploy them, as in the past they were avoided because it is difficult to optimize AQMs by manually tuning them over changing conditions.
